Alfredo Sbisà, a shy bank clerk, is in love with Mariarosa, a beautiful pharmacist. Thanks to a friend he succeeds in getting engaged with and then marry her. Mariarosa, who is already a possessive person, carries this aspect of her personality too far. Alfredo thus loses his friend, his father and his life.
