Oreste Jacovacci, a Roman guard, has promised Giovanni Busacca, a conscript from Milan, that he will help him dodge military service if he pays him. Giovanni, however, is declared fit and he starts looking for Oreste to teach him a lesson. When they meet at the front they become friends and they try to avoid in every way the dangers of war.
